So here I am, metal dude, movie maven and pop culture explorer, invited to a Fashion Week party. Hey, I’m well traveled. I’ve been everywhere from the playgrounds of Monte-Carlo to the grounds of the Playboy Mansion, so it actually makes sense that I’d be there. The special occasion this time was the Ouch! Magazine party on Bleecker Street in Manhattan. Already on their sixth issue, Ouch! is a quarterly publication that explores fashion, beauty, pop culture and the arts, including music and film.
This Wednesday night party was held at The Edge (a showcase for dozens of fashion, product and accessory designers) and featured music, food and drinks (those vodka concoctions always went fast), along with a slew of designers displaying their latest clothes, handbags and fashion accessories. There was a Michael Jackson impersonator who showed off some moves for passersby outside, a bevy of models mugging for the cameras inside and two alien creatures, one male and female, that entertained the crowd just by being unusual. I don’t what they were, but they were intriguing.
While I might not consider myself fashionable (at least by fashion industry standards, although I dressed up accordingly), I discovered that I shared mutual interests with many attendees. One Ouch! writer/model (Jamesson Beane) is also a singer-songwriter. I chatted about metal, rock and the digital music revolution with another singer (Billy Hanson of raunchy electro band Whores Mascara). And I met a designer (Emilie Jerard), whose striking vinyl creations range from anime-inspired attire to fetish couture, along with her model peeps (Foxy Squire and Chris AJ). See? At the end of the day, I kind of did fit in.
The new issue of Ouch! will be on newsstands soon.
