Last night a sizable throng descended upon Guastavino’s, an architectural landmark nestled under the 59th Street Bridge in Manhattan, to walk or watch the red carpet, mix ‘n’ mingle and check out the latest Sony VAIO products. The launch event was celebrating the arrival of three new PCs, including “a touch-screen entertainment PC and the world’s lightest full-featured notebook”. Attendees were also treated to a performance by the unusual cabaret circus troupe known as Cirque Berzerk.
In the digital spirit of the evening, I chose to ask some of the celebs in attendance: “What piece(s) of technology can you not live without and why?”
BRAD WALSH, DJ/musician and remixer (Britney Spears, Ashlee Simpson)
My laptop, honestly. I’m a musician and I’m just always on my laptop — in the back of the car or my living room or anywhere. I’m on the Internet constantly, too. I’m addicted. I do have a problem [unplugging]. Look at me right now — I’m talking to you while I’m trying to tweet. In the middle of the night I have a little notepad, so I don’t run to my digital accessory. [As far as my music] I use the most ancient ’90s music software. I’m embarrassed to even say it. It’s old, we’ll just say that, but it works perfectly for me.
GRETCHEN MONAHAN, style expert/consultant (The Rachael Ray Show)
That’s such a good question. The Sony Webbie [HD Camera]. I was just introduced to it, and I’m loving it. I can’t live without my iPhone, and I do use my Sony VAIO. I bought it because it was tiny and powerful and because I’m not all about schlepping big laptops. For me it’s all about ease and convenience. I’m the consumer who’s all about the beauty of it. I wanted to come [tonight] because I really admire Sony for putting more attention to detail on the style side, not just the technology side. I like the idea that you can get them in different colors. As much as that doesn’t make the computer better, it definitely brings people closer to having style in all the parts of their lives, which is my business. That’s what I’m about.
PETER FACINELLI, actor (Twilight, Nurse Jackie)
My iPhone right now because it’s the magical little thing that does everything. I can text, I can tweet, I can check my e-mails and call my wife. I’m waiting for iPhones to get Video Skype. I would love to do that on iPhone one day. That would be pretty cool.
JILL ZARIN, reality TV personality (The Real Housewives of New York City)
My Sony Vaio laptop because I constantly have to be in contact with e-mail, and I also have my iPhone. At home I have to have my laptop because it’s fast and has got everything I need. I find it very hard to unplug [at the end of the day]. I think it’s a disease that society is going to have to deal with in years to come.
