Creepy Clip: Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn Meet Satan

We should have more kids' flicks like this.

A G-rated Claymation movie from 1985 called The Adventures Of Mark Twain features the famed author taking his fictional characters Tom Sawyer, Becky Thatcher and Huckleberry Finn on a surreal journey. I have actually not seen the whole film — just this fantastic segment — but according to the product description at Amazon, the trio of kids “stowaway aboard the interplanetary balloon of Mark Twain. Twain, disgusted with the Human Race, is intent upon finding Halley’s Comet and crashing into it, achieving his ‘destiny.’ It’s up to Tom, Becky, and Huck to convince him hat his judgment is wrong, and that he still has much to offer humanity that might make a difference. Their efforts aren’t just charitable; if they fail, they will share Twain’s fate. Along the way, they use a magical time portal to get a detailed overview of the Twain philosophy, observing the ‘historical’ events that inspired his works.”

In the following clip, Twain introduces Tom, Becky and Huck to the Mysterious Stranger, i.e. Satan. Allegedly this film has been banned from television because it is too scary for young kids. I would love to have seen something like this as a youngster. It’s intense, unsettling and thought-provoking in a way that most children’s films aren’t. (Side note: Turn up the sound; it’s a little soft. Check out an HD version here.)
