1. MOGWAI “I’m Jim Morrison, I’m Dead” — “If I’m ever lacking in inspiration for lyrics or writing or whatever, I just turn that song on.”

2. THE NATIONAL “Conversation 16” — “It’s incredible. At first listen, you’ll be a little bewildered by the lyrics. But then you’ll notice all day you’re singing it, and then you’ll want to keep listening to it all night.”

3. GASOLINE HEART “Never Been Worse” [live version here] — “It’s just a brutal song. You can’t help but feel something when you hear that song. You can almost hear that guy’s life story in these lyrics. But without him even telling you a story, you’ll absolutely feel for the guy. It’s a very emotional song.”

4. RA RA RIOT “The Orchard” — “It’s a great song with amazing orchestral pieces.”

5. BON IVER “Skinny Love” — “It’s absolutely melodic and the perfect fall song. That’s the perfect fall record [For Emma, Forever Ago], and that one song gives you a brief overtone of the entire record.”
