Deep Inside New York Comic Con 2011: Friday

The first full day of NYCC 2011 was, as expected, buzzing with activity and an endless stream of people. There’s an inherent contradiction for New Yorkers who like to experience the Con. On the one hand, you want to check out as many booths and panels as possible without rushing. On the other hand, heavy foot traffic can impede your ability to zip around and see as much as you can. (Ah, tourists.) Still, Friday is an easier day to navigate. The real clusterfuck begins today.

In years past I have attended a plethora of weekend panels, so I took the extra time on Friday to shop, take in the sights and document as much as I could with my trusty Nikon. There have been plenty of colorful and creative costumes so far. Not to mention some great shopping deals at the outset. The last hour of the Con is always the most fun and frenetic; that’s when vendors who do not want to ship back a lot of product have a massive sell-off at bargain basement prices.

The wildly popular Robot Chicken panel was a big hit yesterday. Seth Green and his collaborators previewed Season 5.5 — including a hilarious examination of Superman and Lois Lane’s dysfunctional relationship that involves him turning back time repeatedly for ridiculous reasons — and enthusiastically responded to a barrage of fan questions. By the way, the show is looking for good female writers, so ladies, start submitting because they will be looking for your work. But just remember, Tuesday will still be no pants day in the office. Evidently its tradition.
