Deep Inside New York Comic Con 2011: Saturday

Spidey finally loses it. Had to happen eventually.

The second major day of New York Comic Con 2011 (and the third overall) was the craziest yet. The Jacob Javitz Center was bustling with activity from start to finish. I was amazed at the number of comics retailers selling new and used titles from between 50 cents to $3 and trade paperbacks at half off, but two or three vendors told me that they do well with such discount pricing. They move large volume fast rather than have it needlessly clutter their stores, and they certainly make bargain hunting fans like me very happy.

Beyond shopping and sightseeing, I planned to attend the Ghost Rider 2 and The Avengers previews and panels in the late afternoon, but by the time I journeyed down to the IGN Theater, the hall was filled to capacity and a line of at least 200 standby attendees was steadily growing. I decided that I could wait for the movie trailers that will probably emerge in a day or two and just enjoy the rest of the Con on foot. Given the fact that the last two NYCCs I attended involved going to many panels, it was a nice change of pace to continue exploring the depths of the event, and believe me, this thing keeps growing every year.

In the end, I think the fans are the real stars of the convention. The time, preparation and effort that many comics aficionados pour into their costumes is pretty amazing. That’s true devotion and true fandom. And without fans, where would our favorite icons and heroes be?

Something else to blame comics for.

At least I know I'll be safe when the zombies come.
