The Marvel movie juggernaut continues on full throttle. The Avengers has already become one of the biggest movies of all time, and now Iron Man 3 has commenced production in Wilmington, North Carolina. Directed and co-written by Shane Black (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, a film starring Iron Man lead Robert Downey Jr.), this movie will also be shot in nearby Raleigh/Durham, Miami and in China. The superpowered superhero sequel will blast into theaters on May 3, 2013, which will mark the 50th anniversary of the first issue of the long-running Marvel Comics series.
Returning cast will include Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, Don Cheadle as James “Rhodey” Rhodes and Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan. Ben Kingsley will play infamous Iron Man nemesis The Mandarin (hence the Chinese shoot).
No plot details have been revealed, but according to a Collider report in March, “Apparently the entirety of Iron Man 3 may or may not involve nanobots. Latino Review is reporting the scoop that the film will revolve around nanobot technology ‘that can make villains’ and ‘that can also make Tony Stark more than a man in the suit.’ Apparently the idea for using nanobots is given to Stark by Captain America in The Avengers, given that Whedon’s film will serve as the tee-up for Iron Man 3. There’s no confirmation one way or another, but LR has been pretty solid with scoops in the past.”
The Examiner has revealed set photos indicating that evil scientific organization A.I.M., a staple of many Marvel stories over the decades, will be in the movie as well. We wonder when their magnificently malevolent creation MODOK will finally appear in a Marvel movie.
