Breaking Bread with Within Temptation

One of the perks of being in the music biz is that you get to grab a bite or a drink with some of the talent you admire and have interviewed. I was fortunate enough to attend an industry dinner this past Tuesday for Within Temptation singer Sharon den Adel and guitarist Ruud Jolie at the Three Of Cups restaurant and bar in New York’s East Village. Also present were other writers, employees of Skateboard Marketing, The Orchard, and Grand Pro-Mo, as well as staff from the band’s label Nuclear Blast Records.
On top of enjoying fine Italian food and drink, I was happy to chat with Ruud about the concept of just intonation and his love for guitarist Marty Friedman and with Sharon about the tastiness of chocolate martinis and when is the appropriate age to show her kids scary movies. (I had just watched Insidious Chapter 2 and lost some sleep due to it, which is rare for me.) I recently interviewed Sharon for a cover story in the Aquarian Weekly, which you can read here.
Check out the new Within Temptation album Hydra, a pre-release stream of which is available on iTunes. At first you might think it sounds just like their last album The Unforgiving, and while that is true on the surface, there are some new ideas bubbling underneath. It is generally more fast-paced and multifaceted than its predecessor, and the guest vocalists — including former Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen, former Killswitch Engage frontman Howard Jones, Soul Asylum’s Dave Pirner, and rapper Xzibit — add another dimension to the latest album from this symphonic metal ensemble.
