Steve Perry Re-Emerges On Stage
May 27, 2014 , 2:11 pm | By Bryan Reesman
Solo artist and former Journey frontman Steve Perry surprised an audience in St. Paul, Minnesota on Sunday night when he came onstage with The Eels. Patrons of the Fitzgerald Theater give him a warm welcome as he sauntered onstage and performed three tunes, including an Eels song and Journey’s hit ballad “Open Arms” plus “Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin'”. Perry has not performed onstage in nearly 20 years and not with his former band in 23. The group reunited in 1996 for a strong album called Trial By Fire, but the vocalist had health problems that stalled the tour, later leading his bandmates to find a new frontman so they could tour. Journey have gone through three singers since then and still play to large crowds. Perry has been quite silent, but I have heard rumors that he has been working on new music for some time. The 65-year old singer and lyricist has had numerous health problems over the years — including hip-replacement surgery in 1998 and two melanoma surgeries last year — so it is nice to see him back in the fold. Let’s hope we get to see and hear more of him soon.
