It has been 24 years since Steve Perry released his last solo album For the Love of Strange Medicine, and 22 since his last album with Journey, the underrated Trial By Fire. While the iconic crooner has made select concert cameos in recent years (starting by performing with The Eels in Minneapolis four years ago) — and he reunited with his old Journey bandmates for their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, but without performing — he has remained quiet. His fans have missed him.
On October 5th, Perry’s new solo album called Traces will emerge. The video clip below for “No Erasin'” is the first released song from the 10-song solo effort. The album was inspired by the loss of his girlfriend to breast cancer four years ago. “In the midst of that, I had written some songs, and before I met her I had sketched some,” Perry told ABC radio last year. “And so about a year ago, I started recording.” He added, “Basically the record is an emotional expression, and a reason to make one. It’s been a real cathartic experience going back to that emotional place that I thought I would never go back to. And we really have been doing our very best to capture what I think are some timeless songs.”
“No Erasin'” is the kind of soulful, heartfelt pop song that Perry has always excelled at. It has a nostalgic and romantic feeling that immediately hooks you. Judging from the immediate flurry of comments on YouTube, many of his fans are loving the new track and are welcoming him back with open arms.
